LACUNA VR
LACUNA was an evolving virtual art installation and community gathering space that was hosted on the open source interactive VR platform Mozilla Hubs from 2021 to 2024 (when Mozilla ended support for Hubs). It invited artists and creatives of the Indo-Caribbean diaspora to share work, build community, and critically engage with the connective threads of their practices.
For the initial iteration of this project, sponsored by the South Asian Women's Creative Collective, lead collaborator Maya Mackrandilal worked with collaborating artists Vanessa Godden (Toronto), Andil Gosine (Trinidad and Tobago/Canada), Sarojini Lewis (India/Netherlands), Dhiradj Ramsamoedj (Suriname), and Seema Shakti (New York City) to translate their artwork into virtual installations that abandoned the "white cube" aesthetic of the gallery and embraced "impossible" spaces that become possible in the virtual realm.
The artists lead a virtual "walk through" of the exhibition and later hosted an artist salon where other Indo-Caribbean artists and creatives were invited to share their work. Participants/attendees interacted with the space through avatars which they moved with their mouse/keyboard (or with VR equipment if they had access), experiencing spacial sound and interacting with each other through their computer's microphone/speakers (or VR equipment).
