In-Session by Maya Mackrandilal with collaborators Udita Upadhyaya and Enid Muñoz and original performance for video by Bhanu Kapil

As part of the "In-Session" series at Threewalls in Chicago, IL, Maya Mackrandilal, Udita Upadhyaya and Enid Muñoz presented a live multi-media performance that activated and responded to Schizophrene by Bhanu Kapil. The piece explored ritual, fragmentation of the body, earth as archive and the affective costs of migration. The work questioned the social constructs of borders within the intersections of race, gender, sexuality and class. The performance included an original performance for video created for the event by Bhanu Kapil, revisiting her 2011 text within the context of our ruptured present. During an interactive discussion with the audience, Mackrandilal, Upadhyaya, and Muñoz explored their personal experiences as brown women, in particular the positions of privilege and precariousness of non-black identity within the imagination of US dominant culture in an era of escalating xenophobia and the rise of global white ethno-nationalism.
