In this piece I am exploring some of the recurrent themes of my practice, using Goddess imagery to explore power, race, and gender, with the added layer of incorporating my experience of pregnancy and the challenges of the postpartum time in a culture that does not support birthing people and actively causes them harm, both physically and mentally. Using an image of my pregnant body and appropriated imagery from various depictions of the Goddess Kali, I am creating a portal to a conceptualization of othered bodies as abundant and powerful, sites of resistance and change. The baby in the center is taken from a folk art depiction of the god Shiva (being suckled by Kali), he is the god of destruction and regeneration.
