Portfolio 3
This piece juxtaposes iconography from Western Art (Madonna Lactans, or nursing Madonna) and South Asian Art (Kali suckling the god Shiva). I created this piece as part of a series called Nurture Revolution which explores the power of nurture in building resilience in both infants’ brains and the brains of their parents, and the transformative social change possible through the rethinking of our most intimate relationships. I was attempting to capture the complex experience of breastfeeding/bodyfeeding a child: the feelings of ego-dissolution, exhaustion, anxiety, depression, and more during the immediate postpartum period but also the incredible joy, privilege, and power in being responsible for the wellbeing of another human in such profound ways.
