A bindu (dot) is the center of a mandala (from South Asian sacred geometry), the point from which all of creation originates. I have been working on this sculpture and animation since 2021 as a mediation on inhabiting the unknown, post-humanism (expanding our philosophy beyond placing humans at the center of all knowledge), emergence (non-hierarchical/non-linear systems of organization, most often arising in nature), and non-linear concepts of time. I constructed and photographed the piece using found objects, fabric, and hand sculpted ceramic pieces, intentionally creating frames that when animated will show the sculpture emerging from the center black bindu (and then returning to it when looped), mimicking the growth of a micro-organism like fungus or lichen. Corona, meaning crown, references both the cosmic and microscopic scale of the piece as well as the still unprocessed collective trauma of the coronavirus pandemic and the need to find healing in a dominant culture set on a path of both self and global destruction.
